Riley Marks Dobbs Anniversary by Cosponsoring Legislation to Restore Reproductive Freedom
Bills would restore abortion protections for women and block efforts to criminalize interstate travel for those seeking reproductive healthcare services
WASHINGTON, DC — On the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, Congressman Josh Riley (NY‑19) reaffirmed his commitment to reproductive freedom by cosponsoring the Women’s Health Protection Act and the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act—two bills to restore abortion access and prevent states from criminalizing interstate travel for care.
“When a radical Court took away a fundamental right, I said I would do everything in my power to fight back—and today, I am,” said Rep. Riley. “Women’s healthcare decisions are women’s healthcare decisions. This is about freedom, dignity, and basic fairness. No woman in Upstate New York—or anywhere in America—should have her private medical choices dictated by extremist politicians or judges.”
A Record of Fighting for Equality
Before being elected, Josh Riley served as general counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee (2011–2014), where he supported the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act and advocated for the Equal Rights Amendment, working to strengthen protections for survivors and promote constitutional gender equality.
In the 119th Congress, Riley has:
- Joined the Congressional Equal Rights Amendment Caucus, fighting to enshrine gender equality in the Constitution.
- Supported legislation to enhance protections for survivors of gender-based violence..
- Cosponsored the Paycheck Fairness Act (H.R. 17), to close the gender wage gap and enforce pay transparency.
- Rep. Riley also signed on to an Amicus brief in Medina v Planned Parenthood, urging the Supreme Court to uphold clear limits on private lawsuits over federal Medicaid funding.
